Video: “Lost History of Rochesterians and Cedar Hill” [#Douglass Week2023]

During the last quarter-century of his life living in Washington City, Frederick Douglass and his family maintained friendships and relationships with their neighbors and associates from Rochester and Monroe County, New York. These friends often visited Frederick Douglass in Washington City, staying with the Douglass family for extended periods of time. Some of the notable Rochester-affiliated friends to visit and/or board at Cedar Hill include journalist-historian Jane Marsh Parker, journalist-activist Fannie Barrier Williams and others.

Additionally, Douglass maintained relationships in Washington City with educators, editors, businessman and politicians whom he had befriended while living in Rochester for decades. For example, an associate of Frederick Douglass from his days attending the University of Rochester praised Douglass on the floor of the House of Representatives during his tenure as a Congressman. Learn more about these cross-associations and friendships Douglass and his family maintained between their lives in Rochester and Washington City.

EVENT PROGRAM for #DouglassWeek2023 released; in-person & online events July 10-16, 2023

The third annual #DouglassWeek will place in Rochester, NY, where Frederick and Anna Douglass lived for 25 years before moving to Washington, DC, in 1872.

150 years later, #DouglassWeek 2022 commemorated the importance of the Douglass family to DC and explored what their stories mean to contemporary issues of identity, race, independence and equal rights around the world. In 2021, the first #DouglassWeek took place in and around Ireland.

We are thrilled to continue our relationships with our many partners and supporters from the last two event series and, in 2023, our program will feature a variety of events and ongoing projects in and around Ireland and the USA and other countries and cities around the globe that were important to Douglass.

Explore our events on our website and social media, and please spread the word.

We look forward to seeing you soon virtually and in-person between July 10-16 in Rochester, NY.

Thank you to BAM Bros for assistance with July 4 walking tour of Frederick Douglass in Old Anacostia

Earlier this week, on July 4, we led a morning walking tour of Old Anacostia to coincide with the re-opening of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. We want to especially thank the two dozen or so folks who braved the early morning heat and haze, as well as two special tour deputies.

While the BAM Bros have attended previous walking tours in Baltimore, Old Anacostia and elsewhere this was their first opportunity to co-lead a walking tour. We want to thank the BAM Bros for their maturity and professionalism in checking in tour guests, answering questions and assisting with the display of tour visuals.

We look forward to continuing to collaborate with the BAM Bros on future tours. An extra special thanks is also in order for the kind and continued support of our friend Robert K. and his conglomerate of various Washington, D.C. History and Culture meetup groups, as well as our the gracious support of our cousin Paige Muller and her Culture Caravan group.
