On my first visit to East New Market, Maryland, a community founded in the 1600s, I noticed a startling sight … a vivid mural of Dr. Frederick Douglass arriving in town, apparently alighting from either a carriage or train with a bag clutched in his right hand and a walking cane in his left.

As I’ve slowly documented Douglass murals in Washington City, Baltimore and Rochester over the past year or so I was struck by this mural for its crispness and unique street scene setting.

Most Douglass murals have a singular portrait focus, with an occasional accompanying of Cedar Hill or other accompanying portraits.

This Douglass mural by Cambridge, Maryland-based Michael Rosato I dare say rivals Aniekan Udofia’s stately and honorific mural of Dr. Douglass at the corner of 16th & W Street SE in Old Anacostia.

I do not know Mr. Rosato but in exploring the Eastern Shore in recent months I have come to recognize and deeply respect his artwork.

Thank you East New Market and Mr. Rosato for this wonderful Douglass mural, one of the most distinctive and respectful I have seen anywhere.

Everyone involved with the installation of this new mural of a commanding Dr. Frederick (Bailey) Douglass at 16th & W Street SE should be applauded and commended, with special thanks to W Street Douglassonian Ms. Melody, store owner Ephrame, muralist Aniekan Udofia and all of Old Anacostia.
